IFSEC 2016 a very
special edition
T
his year´s IFSEC
will be very spe-
cial for more than one reason. The event will be
held on the 21st to the 23rd of June. It ends the
very same date as the referendum on whether
Britain should remain in the European Union
or not. And what if the answer is no? How will
it affect security in the EU and in the UK? And
what will the effects be for the security industry
in the UK? It will be a very exciting last day of
the show for sure.
Other issues, which will have even more
impact on this year´s edition of IFSEC, are the
threats of terrorism and the troubled refugee
situation in Europe.
There are no doubts that security has become
a major and increasing international concern
since 9/11 2001. At that time and for years to
come the USA and its allies in the Iraq war, the
UK, were the main targets for Al-Qaida. Now it
is ISIL related terror actions that form the most
serious threat. Europe in general has become the
target and France now also Belgium appear
to be targeted in particular. But everyone knows
that terrorism can hit any country, any city,
anywhere. And there are no reasons to believe
that the threat is over, it is rather the other way
around. Many terror experts claim that the more
ISIL loses on the battlefield in the Middle East,
the more terror actions will be taken in big Euro-
pean cities. If so, then it has just started.
Of course we don't know when or where the
next terror attack will be executed. But we do
know that governments and also certain multi
international companies have to increase their in-
vestments in security. How will this be reflected
at IFSEC?
On November 1st 2015 I was invited to
speak on the subject of "Emerging Trends" at a
conference, held in conjunction with the security
exhibition CPSE in Shenzhen. My choice of
angle was to avoid talking about security tech-
nology and instead to focus on two factors in
society that will be boosting the security industry
during 2016 and long after namely terrorism
and the refugee situation. More than anything
else these factors will have a crucial impact on
demand for security solutions in Europe. Still, I
was the only one to mention it. Most speakers
talked about the IP revolution, cloud solutions,
IoT and other technical achievements as the
important drivers for the market. It was rather
strange to be the exclusive delegate talking about
such general security challenges within society.
And I remember thinking, am I exaggerating?
Some weeks later the mass killing in Paris
took place. Now Brussels has also been hit by
deadly by Jihad-terrorists. On top of all this the
refugee situation has become increasingly worse
as well. Closed borders, panic and desperation
among the refugees, as well as among politici-
ans, who seem to have no real plan as to how to
manage the situation. And of course, the security
problems that have come with this situation are
far from really under control. At the conference
I knew my speech was relevant, but I was not
really aware of how right I was.
However the new technology advan-
cements do have a substantial impact on the
growth in the industry. The cost efficiency of
today´s security technology is enormous, com-
pared with just a few years ago. The shift from
analogue to digital technology, and the trends
toward more integration and intelligent systems
are all playing an important role for the growth,
but it is still the basic reasons for why we need
protection that will drive the demand for security
products and services. Now, we are just in the
beginning of the Internet-of-Things era, where
smart buildings and even smart cities are beco-
ming realities. Easy integration and scalability
are suppliers' keys to meeting future increasing
demands for security solutions. New techno-
logy, based on open network platforms, creates
possibilities to design cost effective customised
security solutions more than ever before. That
is for sure and at IFSEC it will be proven once
and for all.
what is less sure is how the terror threat
level will change or how the refugee situation in
Europe will develop by the time IFSEC opens its
gates. Neither will we know whether the Brexit
(Britain exit) is a fact until the gates are closed on
the 23rd of June.
Against this background the 2016 edition of
IFSEC is a very special one.
