Japanese government converts to biometric ID system
Seattle, Wa (USA)
The Japanese government is evolv-
ing from paper documents to digi-
tal using "My Number" ID cards
with a face-based authentication
infrastructure using SAFR technol-
ogy, a facial recognition platform
for live video from Realnetworks.
Part of a larger digital trans-
formation, My Number cards
represent a new digital identifica-
tion system designed to streamline
and expand access to government
services for Japanese citizens and
residents.
Deep learning
The solution will be rolled out to
hundreds of thousands of hospi-
tals, clinics and pharmacies over
the next two to three years. The
My Number card reader provides
online confirmation that sup-
ports My Number insurance cards
together with facial recognition
authentication supplied by SAFR.
Certified system integrator Next-
ware, developed the card reader in-
tegration using SAFR's lightweight
and accurate facial recognition
algorithm. SAFR was chosen
because of its speed, precision and
extremely low bias with regard to
skin tones, age, and gender.
"In developing a card reader
with face recognition to be used
for online authentication, we
needed the best facial recognition
system available," comments Mr.
Takayoshi Toyoda, President and
CEO of Nextware Co., Ltd.
"SAFR enables high-precision
face recognition with little vari-
ation in authentication accuracy
across gender, age and race based
on its deep learning of about 10
million images. The availability of
a device-embedded development
kit enabled rapid development of
the product."
Healthcare system first
The initial rollout of My Number
cards provides access to Japan's
universal healthcare system by
allowing citizens to confirm their
identity and medical information
with specialised card readers and
facial recognition features. As part
of the new initiative, residents
will no longer require multiple ID
cards to access different govern-
ment services. My Number cards
contain an IC chip that stores a
digital photo of the user. The My
Number Card Reader reads the
photo information and authen-
ticates the user utilising SAFR
facial recognition even if the user is
wearing a mask.
Many advantages
The new initiative is expected to
significantly reduce resources and
costs associated with the adminis-
tration of healthcare information
while increasing convenience and
access for all citizens and residents.
The new digital system will also
enable health providers to access
accurate historical medical data
reducing treatment time and
avoiding costly errors.
Massive lithium battery plant
turns to Nexus for ID management
Stockholm, Sweden
Nexus
will, through its partner
Atea, provide Northvolt, with
a flexible and secure service to
manage corporate badges for its
employees. Northvolt is an opera-
tor of lithium-ion battery plants
intended to produce batteries for
electric vehicles,
Northvolt's first gigafactory
of over 100,000 square metres is
currently in development and is
expected to commence produc-
tion at the end of this year.
The company's plants produce
an eco-friendly battery that is
manufactured with minimal car-
bon footprint and with recycling
technology without compromis-
ing important ecosystems. This
enables the auto industry to
replace fossil fuels with electricity
in an efficient manner. Northvolt
has now raised more than $6.5
billion in equity and debt to
enable an expansion plan leading
up to and beyond 150 GWh
of deployed annual production
capacity in Europe by 2030.
Easy to manage
The Nexus Go Cards ensure access
to a smooth and easy-to-use online
portal and integrate into existing
systems. As a requirement, North-
volt needed a solution that would
minimize card administration tasks
and make ordering, tracking, and
reporting easy. The Go Cards ser-
vice also enables Northvolt to issue
cards with an extremely attractive
and innovative design using dual-
tone technology. In addition to
the secure issuance and encoding
of the cards, they reflect a modern
look and feel that supports the
image of the company.
ID06 card is mandatory
In addition to the corporate
badges, and to ensure very high
security at the construction site
of Northvolt's first gigafactory,
Nexus, together with partner
Sistec, have created a customised
service centre to be able to issue
ID06 express cards on the spot.
No one can enter the construc-
tion site without a valid ID06
card.
100.000 square metres
Northvolt's first gigafactory,
Northvolt Ett, in Skellefteå,
Sweden will be over 100,000 sqm.
When the facility is completed,
it will be one of Europe's largest
battery factories. The factory will
commence production later this
year and in the long term, more
than 2,500 people are expected to
work there.
Northvolt's first gigafactory, Northvolt
Ett, in Skellefteå, Sweden will be over
100,000 square metres.
