The times, they are a-changin’
lobalisation is here and so is the new communication technology. There is no doubt that things are moving fast these days. Having been a publisher in the security industry since 1989, there has never been such a thrilling time. The migration from analogue to digital technology has created a new world of opportunities, supported by shortened buzzwords like IoT (Internet of Things) and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). The communication between different devices and technologies has opened up integration possibilities in a way that cannot be denied. Cost efficiency and user friendliness make these new opportunities available for an increasing number of companies and organisations and individuals. In this context the security market is about to become a sub-sector of the facility management or building automation market. Moreover, digitalisation has started a process whereby the security market is migrating slowly from being a commodity product oriented market to a service oriented one. For sure, the security industry companies have to adapt to these new conditions in order to convert this development into beneficial opportunities rather than viewing it as a threat.
G
Apart from the rapid technology development there are other changes in society which are having an important impact on the security industry; namely the alarming refugee situation in Europe, the present terrorist threat and increasing cases of organised borderless criminality in the region. This, combined with the state financed police forces with limited resources to tackle the problems, is pushing society to outsource services to private players. A decreasing efficiency to prevent and solve crimes is also a driving force for the demand of technology and services from the security industry to different industry and commercial sectors. The times, they are a-changin’ is just as true as when Bob Dylan wrote the lyrics of his song, even if the context is different. Soon it will be time for Europe’s biggest security exhibition to be held in Essen, Germany. This year something has changed when compared with previous editions of this bi-annual event. The most spectacular exhibitors at this show have always been Siemens and Bosch, with their enormous stands. At Security Essen 2016, neither of these two German giants will be present, which is a big disappointment for the organisers, but also for the visitors. And moreover, it is also a sign of – and a confirmation that – the times are definitely changing.
